Southwell Chiropractic

A chiropractor is a neuromusculoskeletal specialist, who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with back pain, neck pain, and headaches, among other problems. Chiropractors do not use medications or surgery as treatments, but rather utilize natural, hands-on methods tailored to each patient’s needs along with exercise and lifestyle.

Although most cases can be diagnosed through discussion of the problem and physical examination, chiropractors also routinely utilize blood tests, MRI, CAT scans, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests when necessary. Chiropractors also work in cooperation with medical physicians and other practitioners to provide high-quality, well-rounded care to each patient.

Our Approach

Evidence-based practice means the doctor of chiropractic fully understands the patient’s needs, values, and preferences and then applies the right clinical treatments indicated by the newest evidence-based research.

Put another way, Evidence-based Practice (EBP) puts patient care first. The treatments selected depend on several factors:

  • The strength of the scientific evidence
  • An examination of the benefits and risks of all treatment approaches
  • The patient’s preferences.

Advantages of an Evidence-based Chiropractic Practice (EBP)

One way to think about a practice that follows an EBP philosophy is that it helps ensure the best-possible practitioner-patient relationship, which contributes to better patient outcomes. Aspects of the EBP philosophy include:

  • Knowledge of consensus guidelines for conditions, imaging, and patient age
  • Avoiding unnecessary tests, techniques, and procedures
  • Adherence to the latest evidence-based guidelines
  • Awareness of new healthcare technologies and strategies.

Conservative care, including chiropractic, can help to alleviate acute and chronic symptoms as well as correct underlying mechanical dysfunctions and recommend exercises to keep the body moving.

It is not uncommon for those suffering from an acute or chronic condition to also suffer from other comorbid conditions. The relationship between pain and insomnia, depression or mood disorders is not well understood; however, co-management from a team of healthcare providers may be needed to better address the needs of the patient.

Our chiropractors will partner with family physicians and other specialty providers to effectively treat patients experiencing pain and associated comorbidities.

Up to 30% of the Western population is estimated to experience some sort of chronic pain, which is much higher than any other chronic disease. Research in the neuroscience field has greatly advanced our understanding of pain, including the role of central sensitization (an amplification of neural signaling within the central nervous system that elicits pain hypersensitivity) in the generation and amplification of pain. As a result, more emphasis is given to dietary factors as a possible perpetuating factor for chronic pain. We help you understand these factors and recommend appropriate dietary solutions.
